The Silent Treatment of God pt 1
Mar. 11, 2015
Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick." When Jesus heard that, He said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed TWO MORE DAYS in the place where He was.
(John 11:1-6)
Have you ever felt like God was giving you the silent treatment? If so, you are not alone. I have, in fact this was a very unfamiliar place for me. I was used to hearing Him, I was used to feeling His presence, and I was used to having His peace. Then all of a sudden everything stopped. I thought well maybe I did something wrong, so I began to examine myself. There have been times when I was angry with God, because I had gotten use to feeling and hearing my Father's voice. I was going through a situation where I needed an immediate breakthrough. I had pink slips for both electric and gas, rent was past due, and the kids needed so much, yet when I prayed and cried out to God for help I heard nothing...
Here I am a woman of faith going through something that only faith can get me through, but why was God not speaking to me? I was puzzled, angry, and discouraged all wrapped up in one, because I thought I had done something so bad that it angered God to the point that He has turned His back on me.
To a person that desires to please the Father, the very thought of Him being displeased with you makes you sick. I began to repent of EVERYTHING I knew about; even those sins that I did not know of. I laid before the Lord asking what have I done? Why don't I feel You? Why have You forsaken me?
Does this sound familiar?
If so, I believe these set of posts will be just that extra push you need to get you through the silent treatment of God.
As I was reading the book of John I saw this particular passage of scripture in a different light. The bible explains how Jesus loved Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, and the one whom he loved was sick. Yet Jesus who had the power to heal didn't move. I read this and was baffled, because I put myself in the shoes of these sisters. I thought well Jesus, You are God and You know all things, so You knew this man was getting ready to die, but You choose to do nothing. This caused me to think about the saints. We could be sick or have loved ones who are sick, and we begin to cry out to the Lord, but it seems like nothing is happening. We could be having financial issues, and need help right away, so we begin to declare the Word of the Lord, but still it seems like nothing is happening. Some of you may be crying out to God on behalf of your children and spouses, but it seems like they're getting worse. With all of this going on how can the Lord chose to be silent at a time like this? Why are we receiving the silent treatment from God??
The fact is silence is very important to God; it may not feel like it at the moment, but He really is being good to us. How? Because He is getting our attention. He knows when we need that extra push to cause us to seek His face more. He knows there are times when He wants to reveal certain things to us and if there is no fire under our feet we won't move. When God is silent it doesn't mean He's not working, but it's the total opposite. He is working things out behind the scenes.
Again if You would take in account how Jesus reacted to Lazarus's death you'd see that it was all apart of the plan so that God could be glorified in the situation. He has a purpose for His silence, so when this happens it's really in our best interest not to be angry with God, but whether seek His face all the more. When God is silent it's ALWAYS for our good.
One of the things we have to learn is God does not move on our time or demand. He is the sovereign One which means He is in charge. There are many lessons to learn through the silence of God, and I want to share with you a few reasons why He is silent and how to deal with His silence, but for the sake of time I ask that you stayed tuned for part 2.
This was just an introduction to get your wheels turning. In part 2 we will learn why He is silent and how to respond to the silence.
God bless you
